I recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from my university for my participation in the 2025 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. This small piece of paper carries so much weight in my heart, it represents courage, growth, and a truly transformative experience.
Before joining VITA, I was terrified of taxes. Just the word “tax” used to trigger anxiety in me. In fact, right before I started the program, I had an anxiety attack. I had always felt intimidated by taxes and unsure of my ability to help others with something so detailed and regulated. But I decided to show up anyway and I’m so thankful I did.
Being part of the VITA program changed everything for me.
I gained confidence with every return I prepared and every client I helped. More than just learning about tax forms and deductions, I learned how to serve people. The individuals who came in were so kind, so patient, and so grateful. Helping them reminded me of why I love working with people and it also helped me grow in customer service, communication, and empathy.
I have to take a moment to highlight someone very special, my professor, Annette. She didn’t just teach; she uplifted. Every time I thought I made a mistake or doubted myself, she was there cheering me on. Her kindness and encouragement made a huge difference. Her perspective gave me a whole new way of thinking about accounting. She taught me how to approach problems differently and to trust my own process. I learned so much from her, not just about taxes but about how to carry myself in this field with compassion and confidence.
This experience made me a better accountant, but more importantly, it made me a better person. I no longer fear taxes, I see them as an opportunity to help others. I am so thankful to the VITA program, to my university, and especially to Professor Annette for guiding me through this journey.
This certificate means the world to me. But the true reward was seeing the relief and gratitude on people’s faces when I helped them with their taxes. That’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
